Despite drug battles and internal strife, jeff tweedy and wilco return with their strongest album yet. 'a ghost is born' was produced by jim o rourke and tracked mostly live in the studio. the song structures, proggish virtuosic playing, and vocal delivery that break with past incarnations of wilco. the lyrics are sophisticated, often direct and daring at once. most of the songs break the four-minute mark, and two exceed 10 minutes in length but a couple of songs are punchy, spirited, and quick. this is an engaging album and possibly one the albums of the year
