The Shure VP88 is a stereo condenser microphone that uses a Mid-Side design to capture clear mono information along with a natural stereo image in one tidy housing. Two condenser elements work together, so you can set up quickly and keep your gear list short whether you are covering a live concert, shooting a documentary, or gathering ambience for broadcast.

A built-in matrix lets you select a finished stereo feed or route the raw Mid-Side signals to your recorder for decoding later in post. You can also widen or narrow the image right on the microphone, making it easy to tailor the spread to dialogue, music, or crowd noise without changing your position.

The selectable low-frequency rolloff at 80 Hz removes rumble from traffic, air-conditioning, or stage handling. Even in very loud settings, the VP88 remains composed; it can handle peaks up to 129 dB SPL and offers a 105 dB dynamic range, so sudden transients will not cause distortion.

Connection is straightforward. A single 5-pin XLR jack carries both channels, and the included Y-cable breaks this out to two standard 3-pin XLR connectors for left and right. Power the microphone with 48 V phantom or drop in a 6 V battery when phantom is not available; an LED confirms that the mic is active, which is handy when the mixer is out of reach.

An internal shockmount reduces handling noise, and the integrated pop screen controls plosives during close speech work. These details make the VP88 a dependable choice for ENG teams, field recordists, and live engineers who need precise stereo capture without carrying separate microphones.

Highlights:
  • Mid-Side stereo configuration with internal matrix for adjustable width
  • Selectable 80 Hz low-cut filter at 12 dB per octave
  • Handles 129 dB maximum SPL with 105 dB dynamic range
  • 5-pin XLR output with included Y-cable to dual 3-pin XLR connectors
  • Operates on 48 V phantom or internal 6 V battery; LED power indicator
  • Internal shockmount and built-in pop screen reduce handling noise
